In late 2008 MOPGEL relocated from the Buduburam refugee camp near Accra, Ghana back to Liberia. At about the same time the Center for Youth Empowerment also returned to Liberia to begin the CYE school system.
MOPGEL was established to break the conspiracy of silence surrounding discrimination and violence against women, children, the disabled and the youth. Since independence, over 159 years ago, adequate effort is yet to be made in Liberia to address inequalities and injustice that women and children are confronted with as part of their everyday lives.
CYE currently has one school, located in the Monrovia area, with a total of 250 students. Once accommodation is available it plans on increasing the numbers so that more street children will benefit. Funds raised are for stipends for teachers, stationary, seats for students, printing cost of tests and exams, a school feeding program, and extra-curriculum activities. Other schools are planned for the rest of the country.
MOPGEL has identified the lack of vocational and skills training centers for women, youth and the disabled, leaving people vulnerable and burden on society. After 14 years of civil unrest, MOPGEL believes effort must be made to set up development in these areas.
To do this, it is important to stimulate sustainable initiatives for this relatively new approach: better education, vocational and skills training, advocacy, and monitoring systems are needed. Sufficient human resources must be allocated to the task and training required to raise awareness.
MOPGEL is leading a campaign to integrate vocational training in Liberia's educational system. They are currently involved with a training of trainers program for Liberia in information communication technologies (ICT), beauty care, fashion design, catering and hat-craft. This campaign needs donations, volunteering and partnership.
MOPGEL believes that gender equality is essential for human development and peace.
As you examine the MOPGEL website (http://www.mopgel.org) you are invited to get involve in our initiatives through donation, volunteering and partnership. Women and disabled have the right to independent living. Women, the disabled and the youths are partners in development and have the right to equal opportunities. We encourage you to work with us to move this process forward.
MOPGEL - ICT Literacy & Digital Campaign
Information Communication Technologies (ICT) are clearly powerful capable of serving both men and women and is one of the vital tools for those seeking gender equality poverty reduction and the empowerment of women.
Since the advent of the information technology (IT) revolution, countries that embraced the concept have made significant progress toward poverty reduction and the empowerment of women.
Liberia is one of the countries in the West Africa sub-region that is yet to embrace this information technology revolution due to insatiability.
In an effort to bridge this gap, MOPGEL in 2004 launched a project entitled - MOPGE-ICT Literacy & Digital Campaign in Ghana at the Buduburam Refugee Camp.
The project is a training of trainers for Liberia. Under the project, two females and one male are selected from each of the fifteen political sub-divisions of Liberia as local volunteers under going training in software, hardware, networking.
100% OF ALL FUNDS COLLECTED BY DR CONLEY ARE SENT TO MOPGEL AND CYE.
