In late 2008 MOPGEL relocated from the Buduburam refugee camp near Accra, Ghana back to Liberia.
MOPGEL was established to break the conspiracy of silence surrounding discrimination and violence against women, children, the disabled and the youth. Since independence, over 159 years ago, adequate effort is yet to be made in Liberia to address inequalities and injustice that women and children are confronted with as part of their everyday lives.
Our main concern at this moment is to raise $13,000 to run the MOPGEL school, "Equality Academy" in Monrovia, the capital. The plan is to have 225 elementary and junior high school students enrolled for mid-August. The challenge is that we need money immediately to pay for the building rental by early August. Funds raised are for stipends for teachers, stationary, seats for students, printing cost of tests and exams, a school feeding program, and extra-curriculum activities.
MOPGEL has identified the lack of vocational and skills training centers for women, youth and the disabled, leaving people vulnerable and burden on society. After 14 years of civil unrest, MOPGEL believes effort must be made to set up development in these areas.
To do this, it is important to stimulate sustainable initiatives for this relatively new approach: better education, vocational and skills training, advocacy, and monitoring systems are needed. Sufficient human resources must be allocated to the task and training required to raise awareness.
MOPGEL is leading a campaign to integrate vocational training in Liberia's educational system. They are currently involved with a training of trainers program for Liberia in information communication technologies (ICT), beauty care, fashion design, catering and hat-craft. This campaign needs donations, volunteering and partnership.
MOPGEL believes that gender equality is essential for human development and peace.
As you examine the MOPGEL website (http://www.mopgel.org) you are invited to get involved in our initiatives through donations, volunteering and partnership. Women, children and disabled have the right to independent living. Women, the disabled and the youths are partners in development and have the right to equal opportunities. We encourage you to work with us to move this process forward.
100% OF ALL FUNDS COLLECTED ARE SENT TO MOPGEL.
